Le bactériophage au service de notre santé: phagothérapie, production d’anticorps monoclonaux thérapeutiques par « Phage display » et utilisation diagnostique en tant que détecteur de bactéries

Bacteriophages are bacteria viruses found in all environments and in large quantities. Their diversity is exceptional, both in terms of morphology or cycle of infection. The phage-bacteria specificity allows the detection of human pathogens in the field of food and water safety and in medicine for the diagnosis of diseases.

Chaque phage a la particularité primordiale d’être spécifique d’une espèce de bactérie et toutes ces caractéristiques confèrent aux phages de nombreuses applications d’intérêt dans le domaine de la santé. La recrudescence des résistances aux antibiotiques a permis le retour de la phagothérapie, soit « soigner par les phages ». De nombreuses recherches et essais cliniques ont ainsi été réalisés avec succès. Les bactériophages permettent également la production d’anticorps monoclonaux thérapeutiques pour la prise en charge de nombreuses pathologies grâce à la technique du « Phage display ». Seize de ces anticorps sont disponibles en officine et le pharmacien a donc un rôle important à jouer. Les bactériophages ont aussi un rôle en tant que détecteurs de bactéries. La spécificité phage-bactérie permet la détection d’agents pathogènes pour l’homme dans le domaine de la sécurité sanitaire et de la médecine humaine pour le diagnostic de maladies.
