Abstract
The Khazars were a medieval semi-nomadic Turkic people who in the period from the 7th to the 11th century settled in the area of present-day western Russia, eastern Ukraine, Azerbaijan and parts of Georgia. They were one of the most advanced civilizations and represented a link between the Islamic nomadic peoples and the Byzantine Empire. In this diploma thesis in chronological order represented are the time before the existence of the Khazar state, the time of existence, its political and economic characteristics. Special emphasis is aimed to the most important event in the short existence of this country – the acceptance of Judaism as a state religion.
