Abstract

Este artículo analiza la disputa que suscitó en el siglo XIX la conservación de las pinturas murales barrocas realizadas por Lucas Valdés en el atrio del Hospital de Venerables Sacerdotes (Sevilla). Frente a los defensores de la restauración de los murales por su alto valor artístico, otros justificaron su sustitución por su lamentable estado de deterioro. El debate involucró a las principales instituciones decimonónicas responsables del patrimonio y reclamó el dictamen de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando y la Real Academia de la Historia, en Madrid, como máximas autoridades responsables de la custodia del patrimonio nacional.<br />This article analyzes the dispute that provoked in the nineteenth century the conservation of Baroque wall paintings realized by Lucas Valdés in the atrium of the “Hospital de Venerables Sacerdotes” (Seville). Facing those who advocated the restoration of the murals due to their high artistic value, others justified their substitution basing on their deplorable state of conservation. This debate involved the main institutions responsible for heritage during the nineteenth century and claimed the opinion of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando and the Royal Academy of History, in Madrid, as top officials responsible for the custody of the National Heritage.<br />Universidad de Granada.
