Financial transparency in the Spanish local government: Analysis of the municipalities of Comunitat Valenciana

Treball de Final de Grau en Finances i Comptabilitat. Codi: FC1049. Curs acadèmic 2014-2015 The aim for this End of Degree Project is two-fold. Firstly, we are going to produce a measure -Transparency Index of municipalities of Comunitat Valenciana (ITACV) - that will enable us to quantify the level of transparency attained in each municipality. Secondly, results from 65 Valencian municipalities are used to test if it is statistically significant to the determinants of transparency. We find deficits exist in the promulgation of the information on the part of the municipalities. The Tobit model regression shows interesting results; the population, unemployment, debt and taxes per capita influence and increase the financial transparency but, a population with a higher number of 65 years and older in a municipality and transferences received, contribute to reduce a transparency level. While several previous findings of the literature are confirmed, some new results are also obtained.
