Abstract

Thesis (Masters by research(Health Sciences))--University of South Australia, 2021. Includes bibliographical references (pages 77-91) Living organ donation is a major life event and due to the concentration of specialist services in major metropolitan hospitals, may result in additional burdens for people who choose to donate a kidney or partial liver if they reside in rural, regional or remote locations. This research aimed to gain a better understanding of the emotional, medical, social, financial and practical impacts of this experience for rural people, and explore strategies through which they could be better supported through this experience. A systematic review and in-depth interviews highlighted a unique population willing to undergo a major surgery to help save, or improve the quality of a life; but would benefit from additional emotional, instrumental and educational support to help them navigate the donation process.
