Abstract

This record contains a PhD dissertation and 4 short videos (visualisation demonstrations). Thesis (PhD(Computer and Information Science))--University of South Australia, 2017. Includes bibliographical references (pages 419-440) This dissertation presents a novel contribution to the field of augmented reality information visualisation - Situated Analytics. This dissertation proposed and evaluated situated analytics, merging augmented reality and visual analytics. Situated Analytics provides users with analytical reasoning tools for augmented reality information visualisation, involving users in the data investigation process. Situated and abstract visualisation techniques were developed based on the situated analytics requirements and limitations, to reduce visual cluttering, and to enhance the information accessibility. Two visual representation approaches were demonstrated through this research: visual cue and visual blending. Visual cues use annotations and graphical cues for information visualisation. Visual blending merges virtual content into the real scene to reduce the visual cluttering and to enhance the perception of information. This dissertation also presents novel blended interaction techniques for Situated Analytics. The developed techniques allow users to interact with physical objects and their associated data analytically. Panopto/Science, Mathematics & Computing
