Abstract

The Melanesian archipelago of Vanuatu, a former Anglo-French condominium, is one of the most uncommon multilingual micro-states of the Pacific Ocean. Though its traditional cultural background has been disrupted by one century of dual European influence, a hundred Melanesian languages, a national pidgin and two colonial languages keep on coexisting eighteen years after independence. This diversity has not resulted in a classical patchwork but in an intricate geographical system in which identity is a changing linguistic and cultural combination. (Résumé d'auteur)
