Abstract
- The aim of this study was to investigate, if there are differences shown in the appearance of the frontal teeth of people shown on magazine covers and a control group. Furthermore, it was investigated whether there are any differences in the outcome of different groups of journals. Therefore TV magazines, fashion magazines, women magazines as well as alternative magazines were selected for the study. Details of the smile were evaluated objectively by measuring of different aesthetic parameters and subjectively by the rating of laymen. The above mentioned four magazine groups consisted of 14 different magazines were selected. In each case the last 50 issues (source date July, 2009) were examined for usability. 140 magazine covers were selected by a total of 700 magazines. The 140 covers and 50 pictures of female students (control group) were measured according to the aesthetic aspects of a front tooth analysis. Furthermore, ten PowerPoint presentations were created, which included ten mouth and face sections of ten different facial photos. 266 laymen evaluated the images by visual analogue scale. The evaluations were carried out with a specially designed questionnaire. The objective measurement showed statistically significant differences when comparing the groups. The largest significances were found in tooth color, buccalcorridor size and in the distance of the incisal edges to the lower lip (p = 0.000). The subjective analysis, assessed by participants (laymen), again the different groups of magazines differed significantly from each other. Differences were also shown when comparing the different sized cut-outs. Far less significant differences were shown in the assessment of the facial cut-outs. This confirmes, that the aesthetic meaning of the teeth is reduced with increasing size of the cut-outs. Next the objective and subjective measurements were correlated: The measured values for the tooth size, tooth proportions, midline deviation and shade did not correlate with the assessment of the participants. The measured values for the buccalcorridor, the extent of gummysmiles and the extent of the smile line correlated with the subjective measurements. The smaller the buccalcorridor, the smaller the extent of gummysmiles and the greater the degree of smile line, the better the aesthetic rating.
