Abstract
- Teleworking has been a debated topic in recent years, with employee opinions divided. Teleworking has resulted in both positive and negative aspects regarding employees' intrinsic motivation where their individual characteristics have a significant role. Against this background, the aim of the study was to analyze the impact teleworking had on employees' intrinsic motivation, as well as investigate why some employees experience stronger or weaker motivation when working remotely within the same department. The investigation is based on Self-Determination Theory, and its three psychological needs: autonomy, competence and relatedness. The study has applied a qualitative case study, where seven interviews were conducted. The study has been limited to employees at Handelsbanken's IT department at Gärdet in Stockholm, where six people took part. The results showed that the intrinsic motivation was experienced differently by the respondents when working remotely. A handful felt that teleworking inhibited or increased their intrinsic motivation, while the majority felt that teleworking had no effect on their intrinsic motivation. Furthermore, intrinsic motivation influenced the choice of workplace, where the psychological needs of autonomy, competence and relatedness played a significant role. The need that had the greatest impact on the choice of workplace was the individual's need for relatedness.
