Abstract

The found prevalence of foot pain in the adult general population ranges from 22% to 25%. Foot pain may impair mobility and decrease the sense of well-being. A variety of different disorders may result in foot pain. This thesis describes several causes of forefoot pain, with results of clinical studies focusing on specific treatment of these causes. Specifically lesser toe deformities and rheumatoid forefoot deformity are evaluated. From here, general recommendations on definitions and treatment of these disorders are described. The main conclusion of this thesis is that limited scientific knowledge on forefoot problems exists. Despite the high prevalence of these problems, limited scientific studies, directed on this topic, are performed. These problems are often underestimated and thus inadequately treated. It is expected forefoot related problems will rise, due to ageing, insufficient footwear and sports activities. Increase of specific studies, with increase of knowledge, should lead to higher quality of care of this patient population.
