Abstract

Concentrations of nitrogen oxides and particulates which are calculated along roads in the period 2010 to 2015 are, on average, close to concentrations measured at those locations. The calculation methods for air quality comply with the requirements of the European Commission and Dutch legislation. This can be concluded from research conducted by the RIVM, conducted for the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment. For both nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter, the model performance is well within the requirements set by the EU directive for models. It should be kept in mind that both measurements and calculations of air quality have uncertainties of several microgram per cubic meter. Although it is possible to get a good picture of the air quality calculations and measurements and assessed, it is important to recognize the uncertainties. During the period examined approximately 190 measured concentrations of particulate matter (PM10), about 100 smaller concentrations of particulate matter (PM2,5) and nitrogen dioxide measured over 2300 compared with the results of the official standard calculation for air quality. The conclusions in this report correspond closely with those of a similar analysis of the RIVM in 2013.
