Abstract

1) When I paste a piece of filter paper which is wetted by a test sample with a filter paper strip, instead of putting the test sample on the strip directly, I can obtain a well developed chromatogram with scarcely any affections. So I find that it is possible to develope and detect the undeveloped portion in HCl-butanol system, by pasteing with another strip and developing in HCl-acetone system, and so on. Thus this method may be applicable to the systematic inorganic analysis of paper chromatography. 2) Generally we used to employ alcoholic alizarin and saturated Na-rhodizonate solutions to detect the alkaline earth ions on paper chromatogram, but the latter is so expensive and unstable that we can't use it for student practice. Instead of Na-rhodizonate method, I tried the following method in successful ; after dipping the strip of filter paper in alcoholic galic acid solution (0.3%) and drying, we dip it again in alcoholic alizarin solution (0.1%) and dry, then hang it in NH3 gas. Dark blue spot of (Ca) appears firstly, dark green of (Ba) secondly and dark greenish, brown (Sr) then appears. All of them turn to dark brown at last. As to the sensitivity of this method, I find that we can detect Ca++ impurity in 5% solution of commercial Sr(NO3)2 and Ba(NO3)2, and that Sr and Ba are detected by this method, mentioned above, as clear as Ca is detected in alizarin method.
