Storytelling in Semi-structured Interviews: Resources for Information-gathering and Rapport

This paper examines storytelling in semi-structured survey interviews and elucidates characteristic functions of stories narrated by respondents. Ninety-six stories from sixteen three-party interviews were analyzed. Respondents were pairs of female university students of the same age who were either friends or had met for the first time. The survey questions concerned the use of mobile phones and language use in every-day communication.The analysis showed that the respondents’ storytelling had the following functions: 1）to provide examples and/or a basis for answers and enrich the informational content, 2）to aid the interviewer in making further questions, 3）to enhance interactions between the respondents, and 4）to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. These findings led to the conclusion that storytelling contributed to semi-structured survey interviews by enhancing information-gathering and building rapport among participants.本稿では、半構造化面接調査における回答者のストーリーテリングを分析し、その特徴的機能と面接調査への寄与を考察した。分析データは、調査者1名、回答者2名による三者間面接調査16件に現れたストーリー96個である。回答者は友人または初対面の同年齢の女子大学生で、調査質問は携帯電話の利用や日常の言語使用に関するものであった。分析の結果、回答者によるストーリーテリングには、1）回答の具体例や根拠を示し、情報内容を豊かにする、2）調査者がより深い質問をする機会を提供する、3）回答者間相互行為を促進する、4）場の雰囲気を和やかにするという機能が見出された。これらに基づき、ストーリーテリングが半構造化面接調査において効果的な情報収集とラポール構築に寄与していると結論づけた。
