Abstract
- Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) are promising bio-based materials for numerous applications, either as replacement of oil-based materials in existing products, potentially with added functionality, or in generating novel materials and products. VTT has been involved in CNF research since 2008, and has expertise related to their manufacturing, modification, characterization, safety and sustainability, rheology and processability, as well as to selected applications. Examples of applications which are considered very potential and strategically important for VTT include paper and board, films and CNF filaments and yarns. Recent developments in the production of cellulose nanofibrils at high consistency with an economically feasible manner have removed major challenges related to industrial production of CNFs.
