Abstract
- Early detection of congestion is essential to traffic management. Conventional loop or microwave detectors provide flow and speed information but involve significant delays and they offer sparse coverage. To improve this situation, other data sources must be used. This paper investigates the potential use of floating car data (FCD) and ETC (electronic toll collection). These are trajectory data along the routes. DSRC (dedicated short-range communication) data is also collected for the same routes. Assuming that the fused data is able to calculate accurate road operation characteristics, the vehicle number (OBU-ID) is used as the key parameter for ETC data and DSRC data fusion. Road speed can also be obtained by the analysis of FCD. These speeds can be analyzed in order to obtain the road link speed of temporal and spatial variation. A pilot location shows that data fusion could help improve the accuracy of road characteristics. © 2018 American Society of Civil Engineers.
