Abstract: It has been shown in the previous chapter that the Constantinople Convention of 1888 was concluded in order to “complete” the legal regime that had prevailed in the Suez Canal from the beginning of its existence. The purpose of the Convention was to replace the usages that had gradually been introduced in the regime of the Canal by legal rules which would internationally guarantee a definitive and comprehensive system. It will be the object of the next section to describe the most salient features of this system.
