Editorial: Infection and immunity research at the University of Maryland, Baltimore

Abstract

This special issue of Pathogens and Disease focuses on the research in understanding, treating and preventing a variety of infectious diseases that is being conducted at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). This university features three internationally renowned research institutes founded by three of the most highly cited investigators in the area of microbiology and the immunology of infectious diseases: The Center for Vaccine Development (CVD) (Myron M. Levine, Founder), The Institute of Human Virology (Robert C. Gallo, Founder) and the Institute for Genome Sciences (Claire M. Fraser, Founder). Two academic departments (Microbiology and Immunology in the UM School of Medicine and Microbial Pathogenesis in the UM School of Dentistry) house additional researchers in this area.
