Élites rurales, industries et fortune (Catalogne, Vallespir, XIVe-XVe siècle)

La question traitée est celle de la part de l’activité industrielle dans la composition des fortunes des élites rurales, à partir du cas exemplaire des montagnes catalanes. Le Vallespir, haute vallée du Tech, au pied du mont Canigou, en particulier le bourg d’Arles-sur-Tech, autorise de façon exceptionnelle l’étude des relations entre les élites rurales, leur fortune et l’industrie, examinées à partir des sources notariées. Le Vallespir est un district industriel ; la production des draps et la métallurgie en constituent les deux piliers. L’enquête est conduite à partir de la reconstitution de nombreuses biographies d’individus, pour la plupart membres des élites rurales et entrepreneurs ruraux. La biographie est un outil pour approcher l’entreprise, son financement et les relations entre industrie, innovation et fortune dans les campagnes médiévales. This paper deals with the share of industrial activity in the wealth of rural elites, focusing on the exemplary case of the Catalan mountains. Vallespir - the high valley of the Tech river, at the foot of mount Canigou, east of the Pyrenees - and particularly the market town of Arles-sur-Tech, allows in an exceptional way the study of the relationship between rural elites, their wealth and industry, starting from notary sources. Vallespir is an industrial district; production of woollen cloth and iron making are it’s two mainstays. The investigation relies on the reconstruction of many biographies of individuals, most of them members of rural elites and rural entrepreneurs themselves. Biography is a tool to approach small firms, their financing and the relationships between industry, innovation and wealth in the medieval countryside.
