Abstract

The process of expansion and rooting of Mafia associations beyond their traditional areas represents a crucial issue for the scientific literature on organized crime. In this regard, Federico Varese’s book, Mafias on the move. How Organized Crime Conquers New Territories, provides a crucial insight which allows to address the question how Mafia associations manage to transplant in new places. Based on a comparative analysis, the author addresses his attention to several case studies, which show examples of successful (or not) infiltration of organized crime groups into new territories and societies. Among the various variables taken into consideration, the main factor determining Mafia transplantation consists in organized crime’s ability to provide protection to several legal (as well as illegal) players operating within a context of unregulated markets.
