Octupole deformations in the nuclei beyond 208Pb

Abstract

Calculations of the quadrupole (ϵ2)- octupole (ϵ3(ϵ5)) potential energy surface for nuclei beyond 208Pb indicates the presence of a very low lying secondary minimum in the oblate octupole region of deformation for certain nuclei. The well-known low-lying K = 0− bands in the RaTh region are interpreted as associated with this secondary minimum.
