Abstract

In this chapter we review evidence for olfactory communication in the zebra finch (Taeniopygia guttata). We discuss studies that indicate that zebra finches are capable of olfaction and use olfactory cues for social communication and kin recognition. This finding establishes a so far completely neglected mechanism of kin recognition in songbirds.
