Abstract

We show that it is possible to understand both qualitatively and quantitatively, in the framework of the classical theory of electrons in gases, the behavior of drift velocities in gases commonly used in proportional drift chambers. We study in detail argon-isobutane mixtures and comment especially on the contribution of diffusion to the spatial resolution and the modification of drift velocities in magnetic fields.
