Abstract

A modified version of the O'Leary-Rudd periodontometer was used to study horizontal tooth mobility in 10 human subjects. A gross deflective occlusal interference was placed on the maxillary first bicuspid, and changes in patterns of mobility were noted for the maxillary and mandibular cuspids and bicuspids on the same side. After a base-line level of tooth mobility was established for each tooth, an interference was placed, and measurements were made at least two weeks later. It was found that it was possible to cause an increase in horizontal tooth mobility with an occlusal interference, but the type and location of the interference were very important. It was also found that this occlusal interference was tolerated without pain or sensitivity and that all increases in mobility were reversible.
