This book deals with vocabulary, primarily German vocabulary, and with the best way to teach it in order to enhance the student���s vocabulary competence. The book adresses teachers as well as university students who will become teachers. Unlike the scientific field of lexicology within linguistics as a discipline, where the thematic structure follows systematic features of words and vocubulary as a whole, the chapters of this book follow questions which are often publicly uttered and which are of educational interest, for example: What does it mean to ���know��� a word? Which groups or categories of words are there? Are names words, too? How do we know what is one word, and what are multiword units? What is the difference between a word in a text and a word in a dictionary? What is a foreign word? Why are there words for special purposes and how do they work? Where does the word���s meaning come from ��� from the word���s context, or from the history, and how is it stated? How to use dictionaries efficiently. Are there different words for belles lettres? And what about discriminatory words, how to handle them? The book���s 29 chapters are rather short and can be read in more than one order.
