Abstract: By analyzing the Byzantine sources, the author presents a thorough picture of the Arsenite faction and the internal schism occurred in the Byzantine society as a result of their actions. Beside their uncompromising position towards emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, always supported with spiritual arguments, the Arsenites also had concrete political-religious interests, making them an authentic political party.
