Abstract

Using Surface Differential Reflectivity (SDR) we have studied the optical properties of a PbSe(100) surface obtained by cleaving a PbSe sample in ultra-high-vacuum environment. SDR showed the existence of a gap of approximately 1.6 eV. The derived surface dielectric function showed, in the energy range of the present study (1.2–3.6 eV), three optical transitions observed at energies of 1.59, 2.01 and 2.39 eV. By putting together angle resolved photoemission data and theoretical calculations, these transitions have been, tentatively, assigned to different points in the surface Brillouin zone.
