Abstract

The authors make the argument that the so-calledtraditional risk factors for lung cancer (older age, male sex, heavy smoking status), apart from geneticand environmental factors, are no longer the only riskfactors one should consider when defifining high riskand organizing early detection programs with low-dosecomputed tomography (LDCT). In general, a worldwideapproach to perform early detection LDCTs in individuals without additional risk factors who neversmoked cannot be mandated. Despite the fact thatLDCT can detect early lung cancer in individuals whonever smoked, the risk-to-benefifit ratio without additional risk factors is currently not favorable either onthe individual or the population level.
