Abstract

Plaque erosion (PE) is a major underlying mechanism of acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Patients with PE may have less systemic atherosclerosis. We aimed to clarify the status of carotid atherosclerosis in patients with PE. A total of 115 consecutive patients with ACS who underwent optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging of the culprit lesion were enrolled. Patients were classified into PE (n = 26), plaque rupture (n = 56) or calcified plaque (CP, n = 33) based on OCT findings of the culprit lesions. The status of carotid atherosclerosis was assessed by the findings of carotid echography. The mean IMT was the lowest in the PE group (1.5 ± 0.6 mm) among the three groups (p = 0.004) with a significant difference between the PE group and the CP group (2.1 ± 0.6 mm, p
