What is a literary heresy? Robert de Boron and the Hauts Livres of the Grail

Parmi les romans du Graal, les œuvres que l’on attribue à Robert de Boron (début du xiiie siècle) sont ceux dont le lien avec l’hérésie a été le plus souvent signalé (avec les catharismes aussi bien qu’avec la pensée de Joachim de Flore et de ceux qui constituent sa véritable postérité, les franciscains « spirituels »). La manifestation de l’hérésie, dans ces textes, est si prégnante et en même temps si délicate à circonscrire qu’il a pu être question d’« une sorte d’hérésie littéraire, de ce que l’on pourrait qualifier d’hérésie du Graal, voire [de] la littérature comme hérésie » (F. Zambon). Sur ce double plan (l’hérésie dans l’écriture romanesque, l’hérésie comme écriture), nous entendons reprendre le dossier à la lumière des progrès enregistrés par la recherche, en nous intéressant aussi bien aux travaux qui réévaluent le phénomène hérétique qu’à ceux qui invitent à réfléchir sur le statut complexe du texte littéraire au Moyen Âge. Among the novels of the Grail, the works attributed to Robert de Boron (early thirteenth century) are those whose link with heresy has been most often reported (with the Catharisms as well as with the thought of Joachim de Flore and those who constitute his true posterity, the “spiritual” Franciscans). The manifestation of heresy in these texts is so significant and at the same time so delicate to circumscribe that there has been talk of “a kind of literary heresy, of what could be called the heresy of the Grail, or even of literature as heresy” (F. Zambon). On this double level (heresy in novel writing, heresy as writing), we intend to revisit this subject in the light of the progress made in research, focusing both on works that reassess the heretical phenomenon and on those that invite reflection on the complex status of the literary text in the Middle Ages.
