Abstract

Portal vein of Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy (Galea spixii Wagler, 1831). Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy is a rodent belonging to the Caviidae family. This paper, taking into account the lack of information in the literature, aims to describe the portal vein origin in Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy. One used 10 specimens which died due to natural causes in the Center for Multiplication of Wild Animals, Mossoro, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. These animals were medially incised and the portal vein was cranially cannulated at first and, then, caudally cannulated for injecting blue colored latex solution. Subsequently, the animals were fixed in a 10% formaldehyde solution and dissected after 72h. The portal vein tributaries in Spix’s yellow-toothed cavy were the gastrolienal and gastroduodenal veins, as well as the cranial and caudal mesenteric veins.
