Abstract

Sufficient exercise reduces the risk of cardio-metabolic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately, not everyone is physically active enough and many people lead sedentary lifestyles. Our population study found that long periods of sitting increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes, even if the person is fit or regularly engages in high-intensity physical activity (sports). There is also a strong correlation between long periods of sitting and lower physical fitness, independent of exercise. To reduce the risk of cardio-metabolic diseases, it is important to engage in regular physical activity and to refrain from sitting for long periods of time.
