Abstract

Teucrium montanum var. hirsutum Boissier (1879: 819) Lectotype (designated here): GREECE. Central Greece: Euboea, Dirfi [Mons Dirphys Euboeae], in the higher zone [in reg. superiori], 1219.2 - 1676.4 m [alt. 4000-5500], 5 August 1868, Heldreich 2757 (G00741484!), Figure 1. Notes: The name Teucrium montanum var. hirsutum was proposed by Boissier (1879) to describe plants from Greece (Olympus Thessaly and Dirfi Euboea) collected by Heldreich and plants from Turkey (mount Spil above Manisa) collected by Balansa. The localities from Greece were originally cited as Olympo Thessalo et monte Delphi Eubeae, the second locality refers to Mt Dirfis on the island of Euboea (Evvia). The name Monte Delphi Eubeae is frequently used by Boissier and his contemporaries, and has sometimes been misinterpreted by later authors who incorrectly believed he was referring to the archaeological site of Delphi at the foot of Mt Parnassos (A. Strid pers. comm.). The presence of the hispid indumentum on the stems, leaves and calyxes is the most important diagnostic feature. The original material is preserved at the herbarium G, and it fits with the description provided in the protologue. We here designate the specimen G00741484 collected in Greece as the lectotype of the name Teucrium montanum var. hirsutum.<br />Published as part of Zbilji, Milo, Lakui, Dmitar, Stevanoski, Ivana & Kuzmanovi, Nevena, 2022, Lectotypification of names related to Teucrium montanum L.
