'Purplewashing' or feminism? A paradigm shift in the animation industry

[EN] The last wave of Feminism has led the animation industry to adapt its products to meet the collective demands of society, creating the arising of female protagonists and systematizing the inclusion of racialized and LGTBIQ+ characters. This could mean greater empowerment for women and these groups, but sometimes it just emerges as a marketing wrapper, where gender roles and biases prevail. The study will focus on quantitative and qualitative data from specialized media organizations, and the analysis of the discourses in both graphic and representation aspects of big animated productions from the 21st century, in order to extract evidence of the relationship between the inclusion of creative women in animation and successful productions with a gender perspective. This will demonstrate that both feminism and purplewashing are coexisting realities in the present and future of animation.
[ES] El auge del feminismo ha propiciado que la industria de la animación adapte sus productos para corresponder las demandas colectivas de la sociedad, favoreciendo la emersión de protagonistas femeninas y sistematizando la inclusión de personajes racializados y LGTBIQ+. Esto podría suponer mayor visibilidad para las mujeres y estos colectivos, pero a veces surge como un envoltorio de marketing, donde prevalecen roles y sesgos de género. A través del estudio de datos cuantitativos y cualitativos de organizaciones especializadas del medio y el análisis de los discursos gráficos y de representación de grandes producciones animadas del s. XXI, se presentan evidencias de la relación entre la inclusión de mujeres creadoras en animación y las producciones exitosas con perspectiva de género, demostrando que tanto el feminismo como el purplewashing son realidades coexistentes en el presente y futuro de la animación.
