'Como um romance': nascimento e atribulações da biblioteca moderna em Braga

Em Portugal, a biblioteca pública é instituída pela revolução liberal nos finais do séc. 19, como coadjuvante do “sistema instrutivo”. Como pano de fundo, um processo de crescente industrialização, de base colonial, a consolidação do aparelho de Estado burguês e, no campo cultural, uma forte atividade da imprensa periódica, a produção do romance, o incremento da literacia e do público leitor. A criação da biblioteca moderna na Europa é histórica e socialmente conformada pela normalização das línguas nacionais e pela introdução de sistemas nacionais de ensino, ligadas à proclamação de identidades nacionais e de fronteiras redesenhadas. O caso da conflituosa criação da Biblioteca Pública de Braga, incluindo a sócio-biografia e teoria do seu bibliotecário primeiro, encerra interessante capacidade explicativa sobre as relações de poder em torno da propriedade, produção e formação intelectuais que moldaram a instituição. O caso permite ainda compreender visões de grupos sociais diversos quanto à finalidade e utilidade da biblioteca pública, particularmente da pequena burguesia e do intelectual público então em formação. A abordagem utilizada, permitindo ultrapassar a ideia disseminada de que a biblioteca moderna se formou por mero ato legislativo e administrativo, pretende dar um contributo à história e aos estudos culturais focados na biblioteca pública e nos serviços culturais prestados pela leitura pública. The public library is established in Portugal by the liberal revolution, as ancillary to the "instructional system" in the late 19th century. The processes of a growing industrialization, based on colonialism, of the consolidation of the bourgeois State apparatus and, in the cultural field, of a strong activity of the periodical press, the production of the novel, an increase in literacy and the reading public, serve as backdrop. The European modern library was historically and socially shaped by the standardisation of national languages and the introduction of national educational systems, both linked to the proclamation of national identities and of redrawn frontiers. The case of the contentious creation of the public library of Braga, comprehending the socio-biography and theories of its first librarian, has an interesting explanatory capacity in what concerns power relations around property, intellectual production and education which shaped the institution. This case also sheds light on the views of various social groups as to the purpose and usefulness of a public library, particularly of the petty bourgeoisie and the public intellectual under formation. The approach here used, allowing to overcome the widespread idea that the modern library was formed by mere legislative and administrative acts, intends to make a contribution to the history and cultural studies about public libraries and the cultural services provided by libraries.
