Une bande dessinée américaine transposée dans un cadre colonial et catholique belge : la série « Tiger Joe » de Charlier et Hubinon

La série "Tiger Joe" parue au début des années 1950 dans le supplément jeunesse du quotidien catholique La Libre Belgique fournit un bon exemple des phénomènes de transferts culturels qui affectent la BD. Les deux auteurs, Jean-Michel Charlier et Victor Hubinon, se sont inspirés d'un comic strip américain bien connu en Europe : "Jungle Jim" d'Alex Raymond. Mais ils ont largement adapté leur propos au support de publication et au public visé. Ainsi, si les héros portent des noms et arborent des physiques dignes du cinéma hollywoodien, les situations se révèlent en parfaite adéquation avec un discours colonial et catholique belge. Comme dans Tintin au Congo, c'est par exemple un dynamique missionnaire qui symbolise l'action "civilisatrice" menée en Afrique centrale.Toutefois, lue tardivement et dans un contexte non belge, cette série peut être reçue différemment. Elle sera ainsi présentée au début des années 1960 dans l'hebdomadaire français Pilote comme une grande aventure plus "exotique" que coloniale .... "Tiger joe" was so presented in the french hebdomadaire Pilote more like an exotic story than a colonial one
