Abstract

Today, the existence of several air pollution sources, such as household, transportation and industrial activities, increases the levels of air criteria pollutants in the urban areas and thus causes premature deaths, cardiovascular diseases and acute respiratory infections. To control the pollution levels, wireless technologies, like Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs), Vehicular Sensor Networks (VSNs) and cellular networks, have become intensively adopted to collect real world data and to transmit decisions to people and interested governments in real time. Within this framework, we developed a new dynamic air pollution monitoring protocol using a communication model dedicated to enable wireless access for mobile objects. Based on Network Simulator 3 (NS-3), the obtained experimental results show that our solution can be applied to control the air data with better performance either in low or high density of vehicles in the regions of interest.
