Abstract
- Several studies have been done in order to detect antibiotics from natural sources, seaweeds among them. With the aim of identifying antibacterial compounds, 6 species of seaweeds have been evaluated. The raw extracts were analyzed against bacteria, Gram-positive and negative, with diffusion discs and bioautography, then, they were characterized by GC-MS. The seaweeds Gracilaria chilensis, Ulva Complex and Macrocystis pyrifera present inhibition in the bacterial growth of tested strains. Three molecules, Phytol, 6-methyl-2-phenylquinoline and Neophytadiene were identified from M. pyrifera and in Ulva Complex extracts. The results represent a potential use to incorporate these properties into biomaterials.
