The Reverse ‘Glove-finger’ Technique for laparoscopic retrieval of appendix

Abstract
- Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) is now common in the paediatric age group, again highlighting the relevance of ‘clean’ retrieval of surgical specimens. Since disposable tissue bags can be expensive, we have developed a low-cost method for specimen retrieval using a modified finger from a surgical glove. We have used this technique mostly for laparoscopic appendectomy. There was no spillage of contents or surrounding tissue contamination and all wounds healed well without any infection from exit wound. There was no break in the glove or dispersion of glove fragments within the peritoneum. We believe that the Reverse Glove-finger Technique is a safe, quick, easy and low-cost technique that is freely available to all, for retrieval of small specimens during MIS procedures.
