Abstract: A specially designed differential scanning heat-flux calorimeter is used for the determination of enthalpy changes in the transitions between mesophases of the octylcyanobiphenyl (8CB) liquid crystal. Latent heats can be separated from pre-transitional effects in certain cases and higher-order transitions can be well identified experimentally.
