The Poetics of Sainthood in Interwar Catholic Literature: A Reading of Sous le soleil de Satan and The Power and the Glory

It has long been recognized that early twentieth-century Catholicism experienced a renaissance of both mysticism and the novel. In this essay, I will examine these phenomena together, and ask what sorts of aesthetic, philosophical, and theological commitments were required to translate mystical spirituality into the characteristic genre of secular, bourgeois modernity. In the past, the mystic had been portrayed in the hagiography, a form that remained enticing to Catholic aesthetic theorists like Jacques Maritain. Georg Lukács, however, disagreed, arguing that the rise of the novel made the hagiography impossible. By reading George Bernanos’s Sous le soleil de Satan and Graham Greene’s The Power and the Glory alongside Maritain and Lukács, this paper shows that Catholic novelists were, paradoxically, inclined to agree with Lukács, the atheist. Mysticism could only be translated into the novel form by testing the boundaries of orthodoxy – the orthodoxies of art and those of faith.

Dans cet article, j’examinerai ces phénomènes ensemble, et je me demanderai quelles idées esthétiques, philosophiques et théologiques étaient nécessaires pour traduire la spiritualité mystique dans le roman : le genre caractéristique de la modernité bourgeoise et profane. Dans le passé, le saint a été représenté par l’artiste dans l’hagiographie, et cette forme restait séduisante aux théoriciens esthétiques catholiques du xxe siècle comme Jacques Maritain. Georg Lukács n’était pas d’accord, et il a soutenu que le triomphe du roman a rendu impossible l’hagiographie. Cette rédaction démontre, avec une lecture de deux romans catholiques classiques de cette époque (Sous le soleil de Satan par Georges Bernanos et The Power and the Glory par Graham Greene), que les romanciers catholiques étaient paradoxalement d’accord avec Lukács, l’athée. Le mysticisme pouvait être traduit dans la forme du roman seulement en mettant à l’épreuve les limites de l’orthodoxie – les orthodoxies de l’art et celles de la foi.

In deze bijdrage behandel ik beide fenomenen in één greep. Welke esthetische, filosofische en theologische opvattingen moesten er in stelling worden gebracht om de mystieke spiritualiteit naar de romanvorm te vertalen ? Die overdracht sprak niet vanzelf : sinds de negentiende eeuw was de roman immers het karakteristieke genre van de burgerlijke en profane moderniteit. Lang tevoren was de hagiografie de ideale representatievorm van het heilige geweest. Ook voor twintigste-eeuwse katholieke theoretici van de esthetica zoals Jacques Maritain bleef die hagiografische vorm verleidelijk. De atheïst Georg Lukács dacht er anders over : voor hem had de opkomst van de roman de hagiografie voor altijd onmogelijk gemaakt. Aan de hand van twee klassieke katholieke romans uit deze periode (Sous le soleil de Satan van Georges Bernanos en The Power and the Glory van Graham Greene) wil ik aantonen dat de katholieke romanciers paradoxaal genoeg het gelijk bewezen van Lukács. De mystiek kon alleen maar naar de romanvorm worden vertaald door de uiterste grenzen op te zoeken van de orthodoxie – zowel van de kunst als van het geloof.
