a «mitigated» type represented, in particular, by professor G.C. Ubaghs who was in point offact condemned because of a philosophical theory, that of ontologism. However the doctrinal préoccupations of the Faculty were also turned towards major ecclesiastical events : the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, in 1854, the scope of the Syllabus errorum in 1864 and the préparations for the Vatican Council. In the meantime the spirit of «modernity» was at work in the philological exegesis of prof essors J.Th. Beelen and A. Van Hoonacker and in the historical work ofE. Reusens and B. Jungmann.
