Soldiers from Knin in the Venetian overseas ground troops in the 18th century

U središtu istraživanja udio je vojnika iz grada Knina, ali i s područja kninske krajine u mletačkim prekomorskim kopnenim postrojbama (pješaštvo i konjaništvo) u 18. stoljeću. Istraživanje je zasnovano na gradivu iz Archivio di Stato di Venezia (fond Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli). U radu se obrađuje način spominjanja vojnika u izvoru, vremenski okvir njihova djelovanja i razdioba prema uključenosti u pojedine vojne rodove. Posebno se naglašava da su u posljednjim godinama opstojanja Serenissime u profesionalne pješačke postrojbe uključivani i pripadnici teritorijalne milicije, zavičajem iz okolice Knina. S obzirom na to da su popisivači katkada donosili podatke o tjelesnim značajkama vojnika, ukazuje se na njihovu dob, trajanje službe, stas, boju kose i drugo. Ovdje razmatranim vojnicima zapovijedali su poglavito dalmatinski i bokeljski visoki časnici te se i o njima i njihovoj karijeri donose osnovni podaci. U radu se raščlanjuju mjesta djelovanja postrojba u kojima su ovi vojnici popisivani. Zaključuje se da su vojnici iz Knina i okolice činili zapaženu regionalnu skupinu unutar korpusa hrvatskih vojnika u sastavu mletačkih kopnenih snaga. Na kraju rada donosi se tablični pregled svih do sada pronađenih vojnika s ovoga područja.
The central topic of the paper refers to the share of soldiers from the city of Knin, but also from the territory of Knin (territorio di Knin) in the Venetian overseas ground troops (infantry and cavalry) in the 18th century. The research is based on an insight into unpublished materials from the Archivio di Stato di Venezia (fonds of the state magistracy for recruitment under the name Inquisitori sopra l’amministrazione dei pubblici ruoli). The paper deals with the way soldiers are mentioned in the source, the time frame of their activities and their division according to their involvement in certain military branches. It is especially emphasized that in the last years of Serenissima’s existence, the members of the territorial militia (cernida, krajine), probably from the Knin area, were included in the professional infantry units. Considering that the cataloguers sometimes provided information on the personal (physical) characteristics of individual soldiers, their age, length of service, stature, hair colour, etc. are indicated. The soldiers taken into consideration here were mainly commanded by high-ranking officers from Dalmatia and Boka, and basic information is provided about them and their careers. The paper analyses the places of troops’ operation where these soldiers were listed (from Venice and Veneto, through Dalmatia and Boka kotorska to Corfu). At the end of the article, it is concluded that the soldiers from Knin and its surroundings represented an extremely notable, numerous and respected regional group within the numerically large corps of Croatian soldiers in the Venetian ground troops. At the end of the paper, a tabular overview presents all soldiers found so far from this area active in the overseas troops of the Venetian ground army.
