Abstract
- The color-octet mechanism for the decay $B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}X$ is proposed to explain the large branching ratio of $B(B\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}X)\ensuremath{\sim}1\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}$ recently announced by CLEO. We argue that the inclusive ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ production in $B$ decays may dominantly come from the Cabibbo-favored $b\ensuremath{\rightarrow}(\overline{c}{c)}_{8}s$ process where the $\overline{c}c$ pair is in a color-octet configuration, and followed by the nonperturbative transition $(\overline{c}{c)}_{8}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}X.$ The color-octet intrinsic charm component in the higher Fock states of ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ is crucial and is induced by the strong coupling of ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ to gluons via the QCD axial anomaly.
