Abstract
- Benzylpenicillin methyl phosphate (BPMP, 1), hydrolyzes slowly to produce benzylpencillin and methyl phosphate. BPMP is a substrate and inactivator of E. coli RTEM β-lactamase. A competitive inhibitor of β-lactamase protects the enzyme from inactivation by BPMP. It is proposed that BPMP acylates the e-amino group of Lys-234 of the enzyme.
