Abstract
- The effect of different base asphalts on the styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) modification had been studied in this paper and the solubility parameter theory was used to predict its modification effect. The results showed that the compatibility between the base asphalt rich in aromatics and SBS was good. The closer the polarity of the two substances, the smaller the difference of their solubility parameter, the more easily they are miscible. Therefore, the solubility parameter between the modifier SBS and the base asphalt can be used to evaluate their compatibility. To find a suitable blender (or stabilizer) based on the solubility parameter model is one of the best methods to reduce the difference of the solubility parameter between SBS and the base asphalt and decreased the isolation of SBS in the polymer–asphalt mixture.
