Abstract

People tend to be accurate about the impressions they make on others (Carlson & Kenny, 2012), but how does this meta-accuracy arise? One way that people might be aware of the impressions they make on others is by observing how they behave with others (self-observation of behavior). Other people likely form impressions of an individual by observing how they behave, thus individuals who accurately perceive their behaviors might be better at knowing the impressions they’re making on others. As such, this work will test the following question: are the people who are aware of their behaviour in their daily life more aware of the impressions they make on a friend? That is, is self-knowledge of behavior associated with meta-accuracy? To answer this question, we will be analyzing data from wave 1 of the Personality and Interpersonal Roles Study (PAIRS), which was conducted at Washington University in St. Louis under the supervision of Simine Vazire.
