Abstract

This paper aims to characterize Popular Education as a theoretical-methodological approach guiding actions in Health Promotion in Primary Health Care (PHC). It was based on the experiences of three community educational groups developed by the Extension Program Comprehensive Practices of Health Promotion and Nutrition in PHC. The systematization of experiences approach was used. Thus, the set of initiatives carried out in the field of PHC is described, identifying theoretical and methodological aspects whose essence resides in dimensions such as: horizontal dialogue, strengthening of autonomy, respect for popular culture with appreciation of different knowledge and other participatory actions. Next, the possibilities and limits of these experiences are addressed. With this, the potential of Popular Education as a social practice directed to health promotion is evidenced, particularly in the creation of participatory strategies, based on an expanded perspective of health that is guided by shared construction principles.
