Abstract
- This paper presents the results of investigations into the role of Si as an alloying element in the high-speed steels without molybdenum. The examinations were carried out on tungsten-vanadium high-speed steels of the 9-0-2+Si type with Si contents of 0.3–5% and 1.05% C, 9.5% W, 2.5% V and 4.5% Cr. It was found that Si many be employed as an alloying element in such high-speed steels replacing to some extent other alloying elements. Steels containing 1–2% Si quenched at 1200–1210°C and tempered twice at 510–540°C have hardness values of about 63 HRC and bending strength of 2000–2500 MPa and may be used for cutting tools that have very good cutting properties after coating with wear resistant layers in the PVD process.
