Abstract
- E.m.f. measurements are reported on the cell: Pt|H2(g,p°)|HCL(mB) in {(1−x)H2O+xCH2OHCHOHCH3}|AgCl|Ag with po = 101.325 kPa and x = 0.025, 0.075, and 0.100 at five temperatures from 278.15 to 318.15 K. The standardm e.m.f.s. Eo of AgCl(s) + 12H2(g) = Ag(s) + H+ + Cl− were obtained from the e.m.f. E of the cell with mB = 0 for molalities mA from 0.007 to 0.110 mol·kg−1. The activity coefficients γA of HCl have also been obtained from the e.m.f.s at constant total ionic strength I = (mA + mB) = 1 mol·kg−1. The experimental results show that HCl obeys Harned's rule and that lgγA is a linear function of temperature T, and indicate that the relative partial molar enthalpies of HCl obey a rule analogous to Harned's rule.
