Abstract

The seasonal distribution of Synanthedon pictipes (Grote & Robinson) in 1969 on Washington Island was determined by (1) studying adult emergence from larvae on borer-infested cherry trees and (2) recording the number of male moths captured in field traps baited with caged virgin females. The estimates of population by the 2 methods were similar: a population of 16,008 borers was obtained from a larval survey and a population of 21,646 borers was obtained by using the percentage of native moths captured vs. the number of marked released males recaptured. These studies showed that 1 generation of moths emerged in 1969 from June to early September.
